Did Tony Romo's retirement change NFL schedule?

The league's schedule-makers were ready to shift the Texans or Broncos to higher-profile slots if Romo had decided to play.

Tony Romo won't take the field this fall, but he might already have had an impact on the 2017 NFL season.

The league's schedule-makers were set to move certain Texans or Broncos games into higher-profile television slots if the former Cowboys quarterback had ended up playing for one of them this season.

Mike North, the NFL's senior director of broadcasting, told NFL Network on Friday that the Texans' game at the Patriots might have ended up as the league's Week 1 kickoff game if Romo was with Houston. With Tom Savage apparently set to take the QB reins in Houston, that matchup landed in a standard 1 p.m. ET slot in Week 3.

"We were looking at our schedule," North said, "and thinking to ourselves, 'What happens if tomorrow we all wake up and we read somebody's Twitter feed and Romo's the quarterback of the Texans? What, then, would we change in our approach to this schedule?'"

North also noted that the Broncos' scheduled home game against the Cowboys would have become a "whole different animal" from a television perspective if it had matched Romo against his longtime team. It ended up with a 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff in Week 2.

Of course, NFL fans will still see plenty of Romo on Sunday afternoons this season as he transitions to the broadcast booth with CBS.
