Chiefs' Andy Reid shares advice to teams interested in drafting Joe Mixon

The Chiefs took a chance on Tyreek Hill at last year's draft because the front office and Andy Reid did their homework.

Does Joe Mixon deserve a second chance? The Chiefs gave Tyreek Hill a job despite a checkered past, and he responded with a Pro Bowl appearance.

What's in store for Mixon remains to be seen, but Kansas City coach Andy Reid believes teams interested in Mixon should "do their homework" before deciding to draft the controversial Oklahoma running back.

"This country gives you a second chance, if you handle yourself the right way," Reid told reporters Tuesday, referring to Hill, who was drafted in the sixth round last year despite pleading guilty to felony domestic violence and battery by strangulation in an incident with his girlfriend, who was pregnant at the time.

"There’s no room for errors for some of these situations. So, you have to do your homework, and make sure the kid is focused in on making sure he does the right thing. You’re getting your second chance. There’s not normally another chance after the first chance there.”

NFL teams, including the Dolphins, have already said they won't select Mixon, who was captured on video striking a woman in the face during an altercation in 2014, in this month's NFL Draft. Yet he's still drawing interest from a number of teams and will likely find a suitor, as Hill did with the Chiefs.

"You have to do your homework," Reid said about teams interested in Mixon. "That’s what we did with Tyreek [Hill], and it’s worked out so far.”

Mixon, 20, averaged 6.8 yards per carry on 110 carries for the Sooners last season. Although he wasn't permitted to participate in the NFL Combine, Mixon spoke with 24 teams during Oklahoma's pro day earlier this month and has since met privately with the Lions, Bengals, Saints and Browns, among others.
