New Zealand's hopes of drawing their Test series against South Africa were washed away without a ball being bowled on day five in Hamilton.

Kane Williamson's team had put themselves in a good position after two dominant days at Seddon Park, but rained ruined their chances of winning the third Test.

Heavy overnight rain continued into Wednesday morning and while it briefly stopped to give the Black Caps hope, it resumed before play was called off early in the afternoon.

South Africa were sitting at 80-5 in their second innings, still trailing by 95 runs but with Faf Du Plessis and Quinton De Kock at the crease.

Man of the match Williamson equalled Martin Crowe's New Zealand record of 17 Test centuries with his 176, and his undermanned team were on track for an unlikely win to draw the three-match series.

However, their eight-wicket loss in the second Test proved decisive in an entertaining series often interrupted by rain.
