A trans-Tasman brawl (yes, another one) has broken out as intelligent New Zealanders point to their rugby World Cup win over Australia to camouflage the pasting the Blacks Caps copped at the Gabba.
Top Kiwi sports broadcaster Tony Veitch posted a Courier-Mail article on his Facebook page to showcase how the Aussie media was unloading on the outclassed Black Caps, commenting: “How quickly the Aussie media have forgotten about the Ashes..”
But the conversation soon turned to the merits of rugby v cricket and which sport means more on the world stage.
“Cricket? Never heard of her, to tell u the truth 90% of kiwis don’t even care about the cricket we never expect to beat the aussie if we do it’s a bonus RWC 2015 champs that’s all that matters in NZ we don’t lose sleep over cricket,” wrote Kiwi follower Zane Houia.
Aussie Mitchell Smith returned fire: “The same goes with union over here it’s really 1 and a half states that play it.”
So which sport reigns supreme on the world stage? Rugby or cricket?
According to website mostpopularsports.net, cricket sits third behind basketball and football as the world’s most popular sport with 2.5 billion followers world-wide.
Rugby comes in a distant but commendable 10th, behind those sporting powerhouses badminton and volleyball.
Does this make cricket king? Pretty sure the Aussies would be saying so.
