A return to NRL could be on the cards for two-time Dally M Medallist Jarryd Hayne after his agent refused to rule out a rugby league comeback following the star's surprise departure from NFL.

Hayne's American football adventure with the San Francisco 49ers came to a sudden end on Sunday after the convert announced his retirement from the sport in order to represent Fiji in rugby sevens at the 2016 Olympic Games.

The 28-year-old had only spent a season in the NFL, amassing 79 total yards on 23 touches from scrimmage.

Hayne's decision to pursue his Olympic dream has ignited rumours over a return to NRL for the former Parramatta Eels full-back and Wayne Beavis did little to dismiss speculation.

"At this stage I don't know," Beavis told The Daily Telegraph when asked if Hayne could make an NRL comeback.

"We are going to plan time to consider our options after the Olympics.

"We've had that many moving parts that have been moving that quickly that we just haven't sat down and discussed what it might mean after the Olympics.

"They are on in August and all the registration periods are well and truly expired by then, but we will be looking at 2017 at what we might do."

Beavis, though, did insist Hayne was not forced out of San Francisco after Chip Kelly replaced head coach Jim Tomsula in the off-season.

"There was no issue at the 49ers," Beavis said. "They were very pleased with his progress.

"The kid did everything he possibly could in the NFL. It would have been nice if he wanted to stay there and go on, but an opportunity to play in an Olympic games is something that doesn't come along every second day.

"He saw it has a wonderful opportunity and he decided to run with it."
